A chemical toilet is a portable toilet that collects human excreta in a separate tank, and uses chemicals to minimize odors. It does not require a connection to a water supply, unlike the traditional wooden outhouse or pit latrine and is often rented rather than bought outright for use on events, construction sites, and in caravans and camper vans.
The chemical toilet was previously a key component in camping holidays as it allowed people to be independent of local sanitary facilities. However, as more environmentally friendly options such as dry, separating and vacuum toilets become more popular it is becoming less common for people to use a chemical toilet when camping.
In the past, one of the main chemicals used in a chemical toilet was formaldehyde which, while effective at minimising odor, can also cause irritation to the skin, eyes and throat when exposed to the vapor. It is also toxic to aquatic life and can be difficult for wastewater treatment plants to dispose of safely. Formaldehyde has been phased out in modern chemical toilets, and a variety of alternative chemicals such as microbial and enzymatic additives have been introduced.
These newer, more environmentally-friendly chemical additives work by reducing the surface tension between liquid and solid waste which allows them to break down and deodorise much faster. They are combined with fragrances which mask any residual odour and make the whole process much more pleasant for users.
Another benefit of these cleaners is that they reduce the amount of urine and faeces that clogs the toilet. As a result, the need for regular servicing is greatly reduced, meaning that the cost of hiring a chemical toilet can be significantly lower than renting a more luxurious toilet trailer (known as honeywagons) that includes flushing toilets, showers and urinals.

All of our euroloo chemical toilets for hire come with a free weekly service included in the price of the hire. This service includes emptying and refilling of the holding tank, restocking of toilet rolls and hand wash dispenser and a general clean of internal surfaces.
